Hall of Fame Coach Jerry Tarkanian once said that “…most coaches don’t know how to teach free throw shooting…” How right he was.
So far during March Madness, we have seen San Diego State go 21-35 from the line and lose by two points to Houston.
Xavier, who had been 6th in the nation in Free Throw Percentage, lost their focus, and went 19-30 from the line. It obviously factored in (big time) to their upset loss.
Coaches and players need to take free throw shooting more seriously. Like my star client, Davidson College, who entered this year’s March Madness as the team with the highest Free Throw Percentage at 79.7%. Year after year, Coach Bob McKillop’s squads overachieve, and one reason has been their consistent exceptional performance from the free throw line. EVERY PLAYER on Davidson uses the AUTOMATIC FREE THROW method, with minor individual variations.
As always, the college basketball pundits, commentators and analysts are having a field day with teams’ poor free throw shooting during the tournament. But NOBODY is talking about what can be done to fix the situation. AUTOMATIC FREE THROWS provides a solution.
AUTOMATIC FREE THROWS is NOW available to STREAM or DOWNLOAD directly. For a ridiculously reasonable price, you and your players can begin the journey to continued free throw success.
Two elite N.B.A. centers, DeAndre Jordan and Andre Drummond, have perennially been the worst free throw shooting big men in the history of the league. That fact has come to a screeching halt during the current 2017/18 season. Why? Because of AUTOMATIC FREE THROWS.
It is time to speak up and give AUTOMATIC FREE THROWS some serious credit where this credit is bona fide due.
DeAndre Jordan’s career FTP was 43% at the end of the 2017 season.
Andre Drummond’s career FTP was 40% at the end of the 2017 season.
The N.B.A. average is 75%.
DeAndre watched my AUTOMATIC FREE THROWS DVD during the summer of 2016. He implemented about a 60% portion of my method, but he refused to stagger his stance at the line. This was a big problem. This past summer, he changed his stance to a staggered stance and is not bringing the ball over his head. He is currently shooting his free throws at 60%...a 12% increase over last year. Opposing teams have abandoned the ‘hack a DeAndre’ tactic.
Drummond is the second success story. He watched my DVD this past summer with his high school A.A.U. coach, a golfing buddy of mine, and radically changed his free throw style. He is focusing his gaze on the rim, he has a staggered stance, he is flexing his knees more which promotes great posture, he is keeping the ball in front of him, and he finishes in balance. All these are critical components of AUTOMATIC FREE THROWS.
He is currently shooting his free throws at 62%...a 23% increase over last year. That is a phenomenal improvement.
Both the Wall Street Journal and ESPN did articles on Andre’s improvement, and in neither piece did AUTOMATIC FREE THROWS get a mention. Credit was given to his personal trainer and how his overall fitness, and new mental approach were the reasons for his better percentage.
Time to give credit where credit is due…AUTOMATIC FREE THROWS is behind the incredible improvement in both these All Star big men.

Free Throws are Critical...ALWAYS
Looking to improve your free throw percentage, or your team's percentage, or a player's percentage? I'm Cob Carlson, creator of AUTOMATIC FREE THROWS, and in these writings I'm going to give you insights and critical analysis to help improve your free throw shooting. And free tips, also.
This is my FIRST Blog Post...maiden voyage...but the thoughts have been percolating for a long time...seven plus years. During basketball season, I think about free throws EVERY SINGLE TIME I watch a game. And I often find myself thinking of free throws during idle time...like when driving in a car, riding on a train, or fixing a salad.
The N.B.A., College, and High School schedules are in full swing. And per norm, I'm seeing plenty of free throws being missed, at all levels. Why is this simple and easy shot such a challenge for so many talented players?
I'm hoping to solve that mystery for readers. So check in on this brand new weekly blog.
The basket is only 15 feet away from the free throw line. There is nothing between the shooter and the rim. No hands in your face. No defender's hands on your hip or lower back. Nobody leaning on you. A FREE THROW IS A GIFT! As in "Merry Christmas." And if you don't use this gift in a productive manner, you not only hurt yourself, and your stats, but you hurt your whole team.
Take for example Lonzo Ball, the L.A. Lakers first round draft pick. I love the way this kid plays the game. He has great court vision and he loves to pass the ball, sometimes to a fault. Folks have been critical of his outside shooting. He has an unusual and unique motion. Doesn't mean he can't get it done. Take the golf swing of Jim Furyk. Quirky...but it works for him.
But Lonzo has been horrible from the free throw line, currently shooting it at 47.1%. The N.B.A average is 75% per game. If Lonzo could make more from the free throw line, I guarantee that he would make more from the field, because his confidence would soar.
His issues at the line? He needs to be more focused. He doesn't flex his knees enough. His shot is almost all arms. He sometimes shoots the free throw flat footed, and his spine angle is too erect. Consequently, he often finishes his free throw motion out of balance or falling backwards. Wouldn't take much at all to get him into a positive groove. If any of you readers out there know him, have him get in touch with me. WHY?
Because anyone who has used the AUTOMATIC FREE THROWS method has improved...FACT!
